Hello and welcome back to A Nu You: Maximizing Life with a Disability! Today’s topic is finding balance. In these times of extremes in life, it is more imperative than ever to find a balance in one’s life, with everything. Please take a moment to look at your life, right here, right now, and see if you are doing anything in excess. If so, is it working for you?

One of those areas that many of you have expressed to me is your desire to cut down on the time when you are on your mobile devices. So how can we find balance in this area of our lives? My theory is always, “reduce, don’t remove.” We like our mobile devices so don’t remove them. How about cutting down the amount of time we spend on them and replace that time with something we have been putting off? Maybe it’s associated with one of the other topics we discussed here, socializing, maybe getting out more, connecting with family and friends outside of our mobile devices?

So in examining all areas of your lives there is really room for more balance. For some of us, we have to get moving more, create more activity in our lives. Yet, there are many people who are way too busy and need to create more stillness and silence in their lives. Some of my coaching clients who fall into that category are now learning how to meditate, do yoga, deep breathing, etc.

Yes, the old adage, “too much of anything is not good” still applies in many areas of our lives. So by identifying what those areas are, make sure that you not only begin to reduce whatever it is that is going on, but just as importantly, what are you going to replace that with?

Work/life balance is still a tricky area for people today. I have to get my work done but I do not want to “work to live.” Finding ways that we can still get the job done, yet leave work at work can be tricky at times, but necessary to find that balance.

So here are today’s Nu Challenge for you:
  1. Identify areas where you may be out of balance, places where there is excess or excessive behavior.
  2. Reduce, not necessarily remove, things/behaviors from your life.
  3. Determine how you will FEEL when you make this change and have that be your incentive.
