Hello Friends! Are you ready to create “A Nu You” and make positive changes to your life? That’s what “A Nu You” is all about. You may think so and deep down you may even know so, but there is a gap between “thinking” and “knowing” that we have to bridge before we start making positive changes. Think of something you really wanted to change in your life. Think about all the excitement you initially felt. Then ask yourself when that excitement faded. It amazes me that so often the initial excitement we have towards making a positive change in our lives fades after a short period of time.

Getting over the hump
Let’s use exercising – an actual topic I will be discussing in a future blog post – as an example. Whether creating an exercise routine at home, obtaining a gym membership or hiring a personal trainer, we get so excited about the prospects of getting in shape. This may last a little while, but then we begin to sabotage the idea. We tell ourselves it’s too much effort to go to the gym – I’ll get tired, what’s the use, it’s easier to just stay here and watch TV, etc. We create excuses not to do it. Sound familiar? You may ask yourself, “Yeah, why do our minds do that?” Because our mind FEARS change. It loves to keep you in the here and now and sometimes, knock you back into the past. Your mind loves to remind you of times when working out didn’t work out – it’s too expensive, it really won’t make a difference, etc. Then your mind has control and prevents you from making the change that deep down inside you want to make and know is best for you. When our minds lead the way it is about fear, disbelief and playing small. But don’t worry because you have a choice of which voice to listen to.

Go with your heart
There is a second voice within us…inside our hearts. We need to override our minds by going into our hearts where courage, expansion and the belief that anything is possible resides. This is where we have gone many times when dealing with our disabilities when courage was needed, but I am also saying we can turn to our hearts whenever we want to make changes to our lives. When our heart leads the way, our mind follows and serves us in the form or creativity and imagination. That’s when we cannot only think about making positive changes, but actually make them.

Get out of your comfort zone
Sometimes making positive changes involves moving outside of our comfort zone. Yes, even a disability is a comfort zone for many of us. Our disability can protect us, insulate us, and prevent us from making changes to our lives. Some may say we have to be fearless in breaking through our comfort zones, but that’s not logical because fear is natural. My recommendation is to leverage fear - turn it into energy. Think about those times when you moved forward in the face of fear (also known as courage) and the raw energy that was present. When fear consumes us and we let it control us it can paralyze us emotionally. This can be even more debilitating than any type of physical paralysis. Leverage fear and the fear will no longer control you.

Your Nu Challenge … ask yourself the following questions when fear arises and you are seeking to make a positive change:
  1. What is the worst case scenario?
  2. What is the best case scenario?
  3. What is the most likely scenario?
