When you consider the energy required to propel every day in a manual wheelchair, and the forces that impact the upper extremity, it is necessary to consider the importance of propulsion efficiency. A wheelchair user who can propel efficiently will be able to push farther, have more energy, and function throughout the day. But, how can clinicians help improve efficiency?

There are a variety of factors that clinicians can impact to assist the user. It starts with wheelchair frame selection and wheelchair configuration, assessing propulsion technique and provide instruction on the method that is most likely to protect upper extremities.

1. Participants will be able to identify 2 key factors to the importance of propulsion efficiency as it relates to UE health
2. Participants will be able to identify 2 differences between wheelchair frame types which affect efficiency.
3. Participants will be able to explain and list 2 key points of wheelchair configuration that impact propulsion
4. Participants will be able to recognize and list 3 steps to assess wheelchair propulsion on level surfaces

About the Speaker

Alli Hyde MSc OT, BSc Kin, OT Reg. (Ont.): Alli has graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and a Master’s of Science in Occupational Therapy.
