Overview


This course will primarily focus on more common pediatric diagnoses, such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida and muscular dystrophies. It will provide an overview of the mat evaluation process and how to use those findings to develop seating goals. Issues surrounding medical and orthotic interventions in relation to obtaining a seated position will also be discussed. Finally, the types of materials used in seating as well as an overview of types of cushions/seats and back supports will be covered.

Learning Objectives

  1. The participant will be able to list two typical conditions in children that seating can address.
  2. The participant will be able to list two reasons to refer the child back to a medical specialist prior to completing the seating prescription.
  3. The participant will be able to name one example each of a primary support and a secondary support.
  4. The participant will be able to name three materials that can be used in the fabrication of seating components.
  5. The participant will be able to list two reasons that custom contoured seating is necessary.
