Jeni Stepanek, Ph.D., works at the University of Maryland and runs the Mattie J.T. Stepanek Foundation. She is a smart, caring, generous woman who lives every day to the fullest. Numotion ATP Jeff Cupps makes sure that mobility is never the reason this customer misses out. Jeni has Neuromuscular Disease, and unknowingly passed it on to her four children – Katie, Stevie, Jamie and Mattie – three of whom passed away in very early childhood due to neuromuscular complications. Her youngest, Mattie, lived to be 14, and changed the world during his years.

Mattie wrote seven New York Times best sellers with books of poetry about love, peace and relationships. Jeni was diagnosed with Neuromuscular Disease when Mattie was 2, which helped doctors extend his life. She now runs the Mattie J.T. Stepanek Foundation to keep the memory and mission of her son alive.

“A team of occupational therapists, physical therapists, engineers and my Assistive Technology Professional (ATP) Jeff met with me many times to design a custom wheelchair that could last for years as my disease progresses. It has done just that. Most importantly, my chair gives me the autonomy I crave. I do need help from other people, but I can still eat independently, keep my job at the University of Maryland and run the Mattie J.T. Stepanek Foundation." - Jeni

Jeff has worked with Jeni since before Mattie passed away in 2004. She credits Jeff with making her life possible. Thanks to Jeff’s dedication, Jeni has a personalized power wheelchair that provides mobility and other health benefits. She’s in a Quickie-720 with a Motion Concepts seating system, power tilt, power recline, elevating leg rests, power flip-up foot plates, power adjustable headrest and right arm rest, a power flip-up tray and a seat elevator. Eight seat functions allow Jeni to transfer to the bed and commode independently.

“I’ve been working with Jeni since before Mattie passed away in 2004. Jeni has been a blessing to work with. She continues to push me in coming up with solutions for her independence. She has become a good friend - I would do anything for her.” - Jeff, ATP
