Joy Is Still Part of the Story:
Michele’s Story
One thing I wish more people understood about living with a disability is how much joy, love, and connection exist within the disability community. Too often, conversations about disability focus only on barriers and challenges, and the joy can get lost.
Discussions about disability frequently center on what has been lost or what may be difficult. Those realities are part of the experience, but they are not the whole story. There is also a great deal of happiness, gratitude, and connection that grows within the disability community.
For me, one of the greatest gifts has been the relationships that come with being part of the disability community. I feel lucky to be able to advocate alongside so many people who are passionate about improving the world around them. Through those connections, I have met friends and allies whose perspectives, resilience, and positivity are truly inspiring.
Living with a disability does not mean life stops being full. People still pursue passions, build relationships, and experience meaningful moments every day. There is still so much to celebrate, and so much to be grateful for.

I think the world would benefit from hearing more about this side of the story. The love, support, and joy that exist within the disability community deserves to be shared just as much as the challenges. When we begin to recognize that, we start to see disability not only through the lens of limitation, but also the strength and positivity that come with it.
