Susan, a retired physical therapist from Lawrence, Kansas, faced an unexpected challenge shortly after retiring in 2021. Diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis, a rare autoimmune disease, she experienced severe pain and fatigue, and her left leg became weak and spastic. Despite these challenges, Susan remained determined to adapt to her new reality.
Before her diagnosis, Susan enjoyed hiking, bike riding, and gardening. Although her illness initially disrupted these activities, she found ways to modify them. “I’m finally starting to figure out how to do things I enjoy but with modifications,” sais Susan. Susan began gardening again and looked for accessible walking paths for her new wheelchair. She and her husband planned a trip to Fort Worth, embracing the adventure with hope.
Susan's independence was significantly aided by Numotion. Since becoming a customer in September 2023, she has experienced exceptional support. “The staff has been very communicative and helpful,” she noted. Lee, a knowledgeable Numotion Assistive Technology Professional, helped her select the best wheelchair options. “Lee is very kind and knowledgeable. He showed me the best options and even let me pick out a color—matte turquoise!”
The delivery of her wheelchair was seamless and her Numotion team ensured it fit perfectly and taught Susan how to use it safely. Additionally, Samantha, her Customer Care Coordinator, was consistently responsive. “Samantha kept me updated on the progress of my wheelchair order,” Susan said.
The wheelchair became integral to Susan's daily life. “I use my wheelchair for situations that require a lot of standing or walking,” said Susan. It allowed her to visit parks, museums, and even participate in a charity walk. “It has definitely improved my quality of life.”
Susan’s story is one of resilience and adaptation. Despite the challenges posed by Transverse Myelitis, she continued to find joy in her passions, supported by Numotion.
