Freedom to Be a Kid:

Beckett’s Story

Diagnosis: Acute Necrotizing Encephalopathy (ANE) | Numotion Customer Since 2025

Beckett is a vibrant 4-year-old from the suburbs of Chicago who will soon celebrate his 5th birthday in November. At just 22 months old, his world changed when he experienced his first episode of acute necrotizing encephalopathy (ANE), a rare post-viral reaction that causes brain inflammation.

In February 2025, Beckett faced a second episode that affected his brain stem. The setback left him unable to walk, talk, eat, or move much at all.

Since then, his days have been filled with hard work, courage, and countless hours of therapy. Now, eight months later, Beckett is making incredible progress. He’s eating, talking, and walking more and more every day. His determination inspires everyone around him.

Playful and full of personality, Beckett loves all things sports, spending time with his family, and snuggling with his Dalmatian, Lottie. He’s happiest when he’s close to the people he loves and always finds joy in being silly and active.

Beckett and his family became part of the Numotion community about six months ago.

While Beckett was inpatient at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, he was fitted for his wheelchair. Our representative walked us through every option and helped us choose the chair that best fit Beckett’s needs and our family’s lifestyle,” shared Beckett’s mother. The process of obtaining his wheelchair went smoothly. Once insurance approval came through, his wheelchair was customized quickly.

Beckett used a temporary chair while his was being built, and the Numotion team made sure his final chair was fitted perfectly before bringing it home.

Beckett’s wheelchair has become an important part of his everyday life. He continues to grow stronger each day, but long distances can still be challenging. His wheelchair gives him the freedom to keep up with his peers and stay active in the world around him.

“It allows him to be independent and keep up with his peers—whether that’s playing outside, going to school, or just exploring the world around him.”

When a screw on one of the wheels came loose, the family was impressed by how quickly the issue was resolved. “The repair process was quick and easy. We scheduled an appointment, visited a Numotion repair location, and were back on our way in no time.”

While Beckett’s journey is still unfolding, his wheelchair has given him freedom, confidence, and the ability to stay engaged while he continues his recovery. Most importantly, it helps him just be a kid: laughing, playing, and keeping up with the world around him.
