A World of Possibilities:

Jake’s Story

Diagnosis: Leukodystrophy | Numotion Customer Since 2015

Jake is one happy boy who lights up every room he enters. He lives in Charlotte, North Carolina with his twin brother and parents. He loves his EC class at school, listening to music, and being around his twin and family. Despite being non-verbal and living with a progressive neurological disorder, Jake approaches life with great joy. Diagnosed with a rare form of Leukodystrophy at just 11 weeks old, doctors initially gave him only a couple of months to live. This year, he just turned 11, a milestone his family celebrates with gratitude and pride!

Jake's Story: A young boy with light brown hair sits in a blue adaptive wheelchair on a sidewalk. He is smiling, wearing a navy patterned shirt, tan shorts, white socks, and brown shoes. Green grass stretches in the background.

Jake’s condition affects his movement coordination, muscle control, and causes seizures. His specialized equipment allows him to participate in daily life safely and independently.

Jake’s mom explains that his wheelchair allows him “to go to school and allows our family to include Jake in our daily activities outside of our home.” It also holds his eye gaze device, which “allows him to communicate to family, nurses and peers/teachers at school.” His shower chair enables safe bathing, his stander helps with “muscle and bone development,” and his SleepSafe bed ensures he is safe every night while sleeping.

Jake has been a Numotion customer since 2013, and throughout that time he and his family have worked closely with Numotion Assistive Technology Professional, Todd Dewey. Jake’s parent shares, “Todd has provided exceptional assistance in not only helping us to find the best piece of equipment to support Jake’s needs, but also on follow up and fittings after we have received the equipment.”

Todd listens carefully to Jake’s needs, researches the best options, and ensures the family understands each piece of equipment. “The ordering process with Todd is exceptional. He goes above and beyond to research items available and to explain what is needed,” his parent adds.

Even with the challenges of his condition, Jake’s equipment gives him independence and allows him to engage fully with the world around him. From standing in his stander to communicating with his eye gaze device, from bathing safely to sleeping soundly, Jake is able to live life to the fullest.

“All of his equipment allows Jake to lead as ‘normal’ a life as possible and to safely interact with family/nurses and the outside world instead of being confined to a bed 24/7,”
