Numotion / Joey’s Story

Helping Kids Get Moving

Joey: Assistive Technology Professional Since 2018

A man kneels to talk with a woman in a motorized wheelchair, who is holding a blue bag. Joey's Story unfolds as another woman in a wheelchair and a man stand behind them, while several people walk in the sunny background.

Joey began his career in mobility in 2014 when he joined a company that later became part of Numotion in 2018. Before entering the field, he worked as an athletic trainer and was simply searching for a full-time job. As he learned the work, he quickly realized it aligned with what he valued most. “I honestly just needed a full-time job, but as I started on the job, it just fit my personality and desire to serve others in my vocation.”

Today, Joey is an ATP in Omaha where he especially enjoys helping pediatric customers. Seeing a child discover movement for the first time is something that continues to inspire him. “Getting a kiddo mobile (walking or propelling) is really fun to watch – as they move around for the first time on their own,” Joey explains.

He also understands that introducing equipment can be emotional for families. Helping parents shift from fear to confidence is an important part of what he does. He detailed that new parents may hesitate “whether it be that their child will be seen as different, they are giving up, or a lot of different reasons.”

One customer Joey recalls proudly is Abigail. Her gait trainer was the key to her independence.

“Abigail’s gait trainer had the best effect for independence. She was able to be mobile and get to places that SHE wanted to go for the first time. She has 3 sisters to keep up and play with, and that is a lot easier to do when she is mobile.”

Overall, Joey says that the best part of his job happens during equipment delivery, when everything comes together and independence becomes real.

“I work with a great team in Omaha, and we get people moving every day. The best part is the delivery of the finished product. The kids are often excited just to get to the appointment, and we get to see the excitement build as they get in and start moving around.”
